Hirani films always had excellent screenplay and dialogue, perfect characterizations, costumes, songs, background score, and more. DUNKI is not a match for Hirani’s outstanding track record.

The plot is about the poor, uneducated people’s aspiration to settle in England. Set in Laltu, a small Punjab village, it has such aspirants as Manu (Taapsee Pannu), Baggu (Vikram Kochhar), Balli (Anil Grover), and Sukhi (Vicky Kaushal). They do everything to get the UK visa, but in vein. A visiting soldier, Hardy Singh (SRK), has come to the village to say thanks to his savior, now dead, whose sister is Manu.

• લંડનમાં શરૂ થઈ કથા 1995ની સાલના ફ્લેશબેકમાં પંજાબ પહોંચે છે. પઠાનકોટથી સૈનિક હાર્ડી સિંઘ ધિલ્લોન (શાહરુખ) એનો જીવ બચાવનારા યુવાનનો આભાર માનવા લાલ્ટુ ગામે પહોંચે છે. યુવાન મૃત્યુ પામ્યો છે. ઘરની આર્થિક સ્થિતિ બદલવા એની બહેન મનુ (તાપસી) લંડન જઈ પાઉન્ડમાં આવક રળવા ચાહે છે. મિત્રો બગ્ગુ (વિક્રમ કોચર) અને બલ્લી (અનિલ ગ્રોવર) પણ ઇંગ્લેન્ડ જવા છટપટિયાં મારી રહ્યા છે. હાર્ડી એમની ઇચ્છા સાકાર કરવાનું બીડું ઝડપે છે. શિક્ષણ, સંપન્નતા અને અંગ્રેજીનો એ સુધ્ધાં જેમને નથી આવડતો એવાં ત્રણને સીધે રસ્તે ઇંગ્લેન્ડના વિઝા મળતા નથી. અપવાદરૂપ બલ્લીને સ્ટુડન્ટ વિઝાથી લંડન જવા મળે છે.  સુખી (વિકી) નામનો યુવાન પણ અનિવાર્ય સંજોગોને લીધે ઇંગ્લેન્ડ જવા પ્રયાસરત છે. એ આત્મહત્યા કરે છે. પછી હાર્ડી બીડું ઝડપે છે મનુ અને બગ્ગુને ડંકી મતલબ ગેરકાનૂની રીતે, (કે ડોન્કી એટલે ગર્દભની જેમ અથડાતા, કુટાતા) સરહદો વટાવવા જીવ દાવ પર લગાડીને પણ ઇંગ્લેન્ડ પહોંચાડવાનું.
• એમનો લંડનનો જોખમી પ્રવાસ, એક પછી એક દેશની સરહદ ગેરકાનૂની રીતે વટાવવાનું કષ્ટ, સાથે જોડાયેલા અન્ય ત્રણનાં મોત જેવી ઘટનાઓ થકી વાર્તા આગળ વધે છે. ફાઇનલી તેઓ લંડન પહોંચે છે અને… 

ઝોયા અખ્તરે ઝિંદગી ‘ના મિલેગી દોબારા’, ‘તલાશ’, ‘ગલી બોય’થી દર્શકોના હૈયામાં અચળ સ્થાન બનાવ્યું છે. ‘ધ આર્ચીઝ’માં એને ચાંદીની તાસક પર અઢળક નાણાં અને સુપરસ્ટાર્સનાં સંતાનોને લૉન્ચ કરવાની તક મળી છે. ફિલ્મનું માર્કેટિંગ એવું સખત થયું કે ચૌરે ને ચોટે સૌને ખબર કે ફિલ્મ આવે છે. છેવટે, થોડા દિવસ પહેલાં નેટફ્લિક્સ પર ફિલ્મ આવી. જેમણે જોઈ નથી એમને થતું હશે કે શું છે એમાં?

આર્ચીઝ કોમિક્સ સિરીઝની જેમ અહીં પણ કાલ્પનિક ગામ રિવરડેલ છે. આપણું રિવરડેલ ઉત્તર ભારતમાં છે. અંગ્રેજોના સમયમાં અંગ્રેજ અને ભારતીય સ્ત્રી-પુરુષો વચ્ચે થયેલાં લગ્નોથી રિરડેલના એન્ગ્લો ઇન્ડિયન પરિવારો સર્જાયા છે. ગામમાં એક રિવાજ છે. બાળક પાંચ વરસનું થાય એટલે એના હાથે ગામના કેન્દ્રમાં આવેલા ગ્રીન પાર્કમાં એક વૃક્ષ વાવવું. ગ્રીન પાર્ક એવાં વૃક્ષોથી લીલુંછમ થવા સાથે ગામની શાન બન્યો છે. એવામાં, ગામના કાળજાસમ પાર્કને પ્રજા પાસેથી ઝૂંટવીને ત્યાં હોટેલ બાંધવાનો કારસો રચાય છે.

ફિલ્મમાં એની વાત મોળી રીતે આકાર લે છે. એની પહેલાં અઢળક પાત્રો અને અમુક ઘટનાઓ છે. આર્ચી (અગત્સ્ય નંદા), બેટ્ટી (ખુશી કપૂર), વેરોનિકા (સુહાના ખાન), જગહેડ (મિહિર આહુજા), એથેલ (અદિતી સાયગલ ઉર્ફે ડોટ), રેજી (વેદાંગ રૈના), ડિલ્ટોન (યુવરાજ મેન્દા) વગેરે ટીનએજ પાત્રો છે. એમનાં માટે ગીતો, નૃત્યો છે. વેરોનિકાના ધનાઢ્ય પિતા મિસ્ટર લોજ (અલી ખાન, જેણે પાર્ક અને ગામની જૂની દુકાનો હસ્તગત કરવા કારસો રચ્યો છે) છે. એનું પ્યાદું બનતો રાજકારણી ડોવસન (વિનય પાઠક), બુક શૉપનો માલિક હલ કૂપર (સત્યજિત શર્મા), આર્ચીનાં માબાપ મેરી અને ફ્રેડ (તારા શર્મા અને સુહાસ આહુજા) સહિત દોઢ-બે ડઝન પાત્રો છે. બધાંને કથાનક સાથે સાંકળતાં વાત ગ્રીન પાર્ક તરફ વળે છે.

Is Mast Mein Rehne Ka really as good as so many reviews are claiming it to be? 

• The movie, dealing with lonely Mumbai oldies at one end, and the poor and strugglers at the other end, has many flaws. Yet, because it is charming to an extent, thanks to excellent performances by Jackie Shroff, Neena Gupta, Abhishek Chauhan and Monika Panwar. 
• The story is about loner Mumbaikar V S Kamath (Shroff) and Canda return Prakash Kaur (Gupta) at one end, and Nanhe (Chauhan) and Rani (Panwar) at the other end. Kamath, who has not conversed with a woman since 12 years, comes across Kaur accidently and they develop a relationship. This happens quite late in the narrative and with unnecessary delays. 
• The parallelll track of Nanhe as a tailor and Rani as his love interest begins on a promising note. But soon, it falls into mediocrity. However, both the actors shine in their respective characters, just like the lead protagonists. 
• There is Rakhi Sawant playing Bilkis, whose track helps uplift Nanhe’s track to an extent.
• The film actually takes some interesting turns only when Kamath and Prakash come closer. Post that, because lots of screen-time is already consumed in things lesser important, the most interesting happenings that would have lifted the film better, come and go in jiffy. 
• Even the climax is half cooked and uninspirational. There was no need to bring Prakash’s son Randheer (Mashhoor Amrohi) in the frame. 
• In all, many viewers would find it difficult to decide whether they liked Mast Mein Ehne Ka more or disliked more. 
• In the end, what can be said in its favour is the fact that it tries to touchdvelve upon a real social issues related old age people, shows some Mumbai locations differently, and gives some satisfaction through lead actors’ performances.
