Investing a couple of hours in The Archies is worth it if…
You wish to see how Agastya Nanda, Khushi Kapoor, Suhana Khan, all three star kids, and other newcomers Vedang Raina, Mihir Ahuja, and Yuvraj Menda make a debut. They all are worth the hype. Agatsya, among all, is my pick. He is really impressive. Of other actors, Suhaas Ahuja, Alyy Khan, and Vinay Pathak are effective.
Zoya Akhtar returns to a full-fledged movie direction after 2019’s Gully Boy. She fails to create a similar magic. Gloss, sets, looks, costumes, etc. are fine but where is the substance in the narrative, is what you will keep wondering throughout.
Too much music and constant interruption of songs is another huge letdown. I don’t know whether it was mandatory to go song-ing all the way here. The Archies could have been much leaner and lovable sans a few unwanted songs. And the songs are not interesting, please note.
Too many characters, and subplots without aim and effect is another minus here. In fact, many viewers who are not at all aligned with The Archies will take a good 30 minutes or more to be in line with what’s going on.
The central point of the movie is Green Park and the teenagers’ fight to save it from going into the hands of a businessman. This point is not used effectively.
If The Archies is attracting eyeballs soon after its release, it is merely because of reasons other than its actual true entertaining power. The reasons are excessive promotion, star kids, and Netflix’s reach. While it will certainly do well for now, it won’t remain in the hearts of many for long.
In a nutshell, The Archies is just about an average fare. But, an average fare from such a team, with such an investment, and released after such hype, is not done!
